Herbert (Burt) James Munro (25. ožujka 1899. - 6. siječnja 1978.) bio je novozelandski motociklist, poznat po tome što je postavio brzinski rekord za motocikle u klasi motora ispod 1000 ccm (183.586 mph, 295.44 km/h), 26. kolovoza 1967.g, koji stoji i danas (2008.). U vrijeme kad je postavio svoj posljednji rekord, Munro je imao 67 godina i vozio je motor star 46 godina.

Radeći u svom domu u gradu Invercargill, 20 godina je prerađivao svoj motocikal model Indian, kojeg je kupio 1920. Burt je postavio svoj prvi rekord Novog Zelanda 1938., da bi kasnije postavio još sedam. Burt je putovao na natjecanje u SAD, Bonneville Salt Flats, gdje je pokušavao postavitit svjetske rekorde u brzini. Tijekom svojih deset posjeta postavio je tri rekorda od kojih jedan stoji i danas.

    * 1962. postavio je svjetski rekord od 288 km/h (178.97 mph) sa svojim motorom prerađenim od motora 850 cc (51 in³).
    * 1966. postavio je svjetski rekord od 168.066 mph.
    * 1967. postavio je sa svojim motorom prerađenim od motora 950 cc (58 in³) rekord u klasi sa 295.44 km/h (183.59 mph). Kako bi se kvalificirao odvozio je jednosmjernu vožnju kada je postigao 305.89 km/h (190.07 mph), najveću ikad službeno zabilježenu brzinu modela Indian. Neslužbeni brzinski rekord (službeno mjeren) je 331 km/h (205.67 mph) za engl. flying mile.

I get teary just thinking about it, he proved you could take a bike regardless of age and make it do amazing things if you really put some work into it, I own a 1984 v4 700cc honda saber (nonv65 model) it's the world to me, I've only gotten it to 178 as hard as i've tried, 178mph, if i were evey to get her to crack over 200mph i'd try to decline the record, and when i get to heaven, I'd have to tell Burt I'm sorry, cuz that record deserves to be noted forever, he had the guts to do the amazing!

Burt Munro In His Own Words

Ja sam gledao taj film. Ali vise je tema filma taj njegov put od NZ do salt lake-a i na svalerke koje je imao uz-put. U stvari je bilo zanimivo samo 20 min filma, gde su testirali motor i onda ubrzavanje na 4 (il kolko vec je) kilometra.

Meni je cijeli film bio zanimljiv, najbolja Hopkinsova uloga ikada, svima sam preporucio da gledaju. A istinita je prica da ga prvi puta NISU pustili da vozi, ali se vratio dogodine i je... im mamu!  klanja

Offerings to the God of Speed

Another Burt Munro motto was ‘fix it and try again’. In 50 years, he had some 250 motor blow-ups, usually because the con-rods or cylinder sleeves couldn’t take the pace.

With basic equipment and astonishing ingenuity, he’d rebuild the engine ready for the next try. He made cylinder linings out of cast-iron drain pipes and fabricated con-rods from steel Ford-motorcar axles. To make a flywheel he cut a coin-sized slice from a hydraulic ram, and used a steam-driven hammer to flatten it out to about 180mm diameter.

He cast motorbike pistons using melted-down car pistons plus his own additives, and made high-speed tyres by carving the treads off factory-made racing tyres.

His determination paid off. He won many speed trials and race events in New Zealand - then he took on the world.
